She Stands

November 5, 2017

She stands.

In the middle of the room

With the back of the gown gaping open

Her heart and soul and whole life gaping open too.

Four months.

They say that's all that's left

For dancing and reading and loving

And praying that there has been a mistake and she can fix it.

Slowly then.

She moves toward her clothes

Reaching for the pants and the sweater

That feel different now and that she never wants to wear again.

Can't be.

She thinks this is not the truth

As she lets her clothes drop from her hands

Then falls from the weight of hot tears and so much sorrow.

Please no.

She whispers to the white floor

But it just sits there looking at her and

Saying there is nothing she can do but try to accept and let go.

Fuck off.

Fuck off you stupid body

That's trying to destroy me and take away

Everything I love and leave me a withered shell in the ground.

She screams.

Then a cart falls over

And sheets are ripped from the bed

And posters hang in torn remnants on the ugly walls.

And she stands.

In the middle of the room

With the back of the gown gaping open

Her heart and soul and whole life gaping open too.
